I’ve had a set of very old porch furniture for about a year now. The paint was chipping when I received it and it progressively got worse and left rust marks all over my tiled front porch. I don’t know why the porch was tiled, but that’s a story for another day. It took me awhile to decide on a color, but I finally decided to go big or go home and went with a VERY bright shade of aqua.
I knew I did not want to hand paint the furniture. I also knew I wanted to add something else to the set while I was at it. I picked up a triple, metal rocker at a nearby discount store. I finally purchased a spray paint that is both a primer and paint for metal. This set required 8 cans of spray paint.
I placed all of the furniture bottom (and ugly!) side up on heavy garbage bags. Absolutely wear a mask (here) and wear gloves (here). You don’t want to breathe in those vapors nor do you want it on your skin. The smell is VERY strong even though it’s outdoors.
Scrape off any obvious flaking of the old paint.
I’m naturally lazy. I didn’t sand everything down. I dried the furniture about 10 minutes between coats. It took 3 coats of paint, total. Very special attention had to be paid to all of the nooks and crannies of this set. All together it took me about 2.5 hours.
Hey, I felt free to not clean the porch before this pic. We recently had storms and of course the tile is in need of attention.
I’m absolutely thrilled with how it all turned out. It really brings a pop of color to our porch and we are really loving sitting on the porch on our bright furniture while sipping a cold drink or rocking in the rocker. I’ve put in a lot of milage on the rocker this past week while rocking my teething baby in the fresh air. She loves it!
